Oslo – the host of the 11th ECOTS The history of Oslo is more than a thousand years old. The city of Oslo, which became the capital of Norway in 1299, is situated in a beautiful location at the end of the Oslo fjord, where the hills and woods meet the sea. By sea you can visit the Viking ships and the exhibition of the Kon-Tiki raft which brought the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl from South America to Easter Island. The Polar ships Fram and Gjøa, and the Marine museum are also nearby. Oslo offers some 50 museums and many art galleries. The masterpieces of our most famous painter Edward Munch can be seen in the National Gallery close to the conference venue and in the Munch Museum. Up in the hills the view is magnificent and the Holmenkollen area should be visitied with its famous ski jump and World Cup arena for Nordic skiing. Vigelandsparken is one of Norway’s most visited attractions with more than 1 million visitors every year. The unique sculpture park is the life work of the sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) with more than 200 sculptures in bronze and cast iron. Vigeland was also responsible for the design and architectural outline of the park, a monumental artistic creation with a human message that is well worth seeing. The park is open all year and is a popular recreation area. | |
